How to overcome failure

0

“Accept failure, everybody fails at something. But don’t accept not trying.”

Mistakes, setbacks, failure – they are a part of life. They are no fun, I admit it. But they can’t be avoided unless you aren’t doing anything at all.

So what can be avoided? Self-beating and dragging yourself down into the dark pit of negativity. And what is needed for this? Smart habits to deal with such situations. So, here I’m sharing some useful habits, I hope they would come handy to you.

  • Accept your feelings.

Failures hurt. Sometimes a bit. Sometimes a lot. But this is absolutely OK. Accept your feelings. Don’t try to push them away, put on a mask of a strong person and don’t hide it with a smile. Unless you let your feelings in, they won’t go away. You can push them away shortly but they will return at an unexpected place and time, making it harder for you in the long run.

  • You are not a failure. You just had a setback.

When you have an encounter with a failure, it is easy to think that you will always fail in this. And that it is YOU, who is a failure. Don’t fall prey to such negative thought, they are self-destructing. Just remind yourself that this time shall pass if you keep moving forward.

Being optimistic during the tough times and considering the failure as a temporary thing – are the two keystones to moving forward in life.

  • Learn from your failure.

It is always wise to learn from your mistake/failure rather than only crying and repenting over it. Always remember, failures require you to learn from them and move on. Stagnation due to a failure never helps. Ask yourself question like: what can I learn from this situation?, what can I do differently to avoid such a situation? Etc,.

  • Failure is a sign that you are trying.

We only get to hear people’s success stories and that’s where we go wrong. It appears all flowery and smooth to us and so when we fail we think of ourselves as failure. Rather than reading success stories, we should explore stories of people who are successful now but were a failure once. Such stories not only motivate us but also give us a glimpse that behind every successful person, are innumerable failures that helped them sail through and reach success. It is always better to try and rule out the unyielding paths than not trying and regretting that it could have been better.

  • Find your inspiration.

Learn from those who’ve gone where you want to go. Read about how they handled setbacks and low-points before or during their success in books, on websites or online forums. This will give you a first-hand experience of what can happen while you are on it. Also, it will prepare you in advance and save you the trouble of repeating the same mistakes.

  • Don’t aspire perfection.

Don’t make it perfect. Trying to do that can sometimes just be a way to procrastinate because you fear failing again or because it is hard to start moving after this rough and disorienting thing that happened to you. The important thing is to get started and moving forward again so make that easy on yourself. So, take small and feasible steps. Just get going. Stagnation not allowed!

These tips have definitely helped and I hope they will help you too. Just gather yourself up. It’s time to move on! 🙂

Impact of fashion on students

Fashion is in the air. fashion has grabbed everyone under its spell. The students aren’t untouched of its influence. The bags they carry, the watches they wear, the hairstyle they do and the way they carry themselves involves so much of fashion.

Students seem to be more fashionable than the adults now. In fact they are good trendsetters themselves. There are many teens who invent their own styles and aim to become an icon among their groups.

Like every coin has two sides, fashion also has both positive and negative impacts on students.

Positive influence:

  • Being fashion conscious not only makes you popular among your folks but also upgrades your confidence level.
  • Fashion enhances the creativity of students. They are ready to try out new trends or even make up their own trends.
  • A good taste in fashion definitely adds to your persona and makes you stand out in the crowd.
  • It lends variety to their lives other than only studying, by providing an element of excitement in trying out new things.
  • They are the icons around whom fashion revolves. They get influenced by fashion and then influence the fashion industries and promote their growth.

Negative influence:

  •  Instead of going with parents or family on weekends, students like to hang out with their friends because that ‘In Fashion’ these days.
  • To follow the trends, many spend unnecessary money from their pocket money.
  • A lot of time is wasted and students get distracted from studies, which should be their prime concern in this age.
  • The trendsetters in schools and colleges many times bully the not-so-fashion-conscious.
  • The paradigm of aspirations like becoming a doctor or engineer or a lawyer has shifted towards being in the glamour industry. This affects the studies.
  • Many resort to crimes like theft when parents don’t support them to buy the gadgets/dresses which are in trend.
  • Girls start wearing makeup at an early age. There is a race to look ‘older’ than they actually are.

Being interested in fashion and following the latest fashion trends is absolutely not a bad thing. However, it becomes bad when it becomes excessive, and that is when it starts impacting your marks and your learning habits.

They must be a right balance between being fashionable and what is good for them. They have all the time in the world to indulge in this luxury after having finished their education. The present time however should be devoted to studies, for it will never come back.  it is also the duty and responsibility of the parents to keep a watch over their children. Too much of information regarding recent trends and styles block the minds of the children and distract them from their studies.

So just keep it balanced, and don’t be a fashion victim.

How to react during adversities

0

Everybody has a life story. A story full of adversities, sorrows, moments of joy and laughter. But some adversities are so harsh that we tend to lose all hopes and tend to give up to such situations. The way we react has a huge significance on where the situation would lead! No matter what, we should never let adversities take a toll on us. Don’t trust me? Read on this short story-

Once upon a time, a daughter went to her father complained to him that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make through it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed like a never-ending palindrome of problems, pouring one after the another.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water & placed them on high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, impatiently waited, wondering what was going on in her father’s mind.

After twenty minutes, he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes and eggs out of the pots and put them in separate bowls.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.

“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean? “

Moral : In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us. What matters is not the adversity of the situation, but the way we react to it.

Do you bend in front of the situation and give up, or do you manage to get out of the situation without any harm thereby emerging as an even stronger person, or do you face the situation and create new opportunities out of the roadblocks.

The choice is yours!

So, which one are you?

Obstacles in our path

0

“If you can find a path without obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. Obstacles do not block the path; they are the path.”

There is this infamous story related to ‘opportunities’. Have a look:

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed in the middle of a roadway. He then hid himself nearby and watched to see if anyone would take the pains of moving the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it, paying no heed to the boulder, making no efforts in clearing the way.

Many people loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, for misusing the tax-payer’s money for his own luxury. But none of them did anything about getting the stone out of the way. The stone remained at its place untouched, unmoved.

A peasant then came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the road. He made efforts to get it out of the way. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been placed. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King explaining that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

What does this short story teach us?

Every obstacle we come across in life gives us an opportunity to improve our circumstances, and whilst the lazy complain, others are creating opportunities through their kind hearts, generosity and willingness to get things done.

Success comes with willingness, with the zeal to make things happen. In a difficult situation, there are two way-outs for us. We can either run away from the problem, change our goal. On the other hand, we can face the problem, take the risk and make it happen.

The choice is always ours. We do not get unlimited chances to have the things we want. Nothing is worse than missing an opportunity that could have changed our lives. Thomas Edison once said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Running away from work means running away from opportunities. When opportunity knocks on the door, always be willing to take a chance because you never know how perfect something could turn out to be.

Always challenge your limits! Because that’s how you create opportunities – by going the extra mile.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

0

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

       – Steve Jobs

It was in 2011 that we lost one of the most inspiring figures of our generation – Steve Jobs. Six years have passed but he is far from being forgotten. Why? Because he gave the world its’ infamous ‘APPLE’, the most celebrated Smartphone.  And, as long as the humankind keeps using an iPhone, Jobs’s name would be taken alongside. Do you think he would have been able to give this world, Apple-Disney-Pixar, had he not followed his heart? Had he not been in love with his job? Had he given up thinking, what the other people would think of him? Had he given up because of his encounters with failure? The answer to these questions is a big ‘NO’.

It’s impossible”, said pride. “It’s risky”, said experience. “It’s pointless”, said reason. “Give it a try”, whispered the heart.  And if you ask the cost of not following your heart. I’d say- a lifetime of regret, thinking that it could have been better, had you followed your heart. It is always a better bet to try and then fail, rather than having to live wondering ‘what would have happened had I tried’.

A lot of people hate their jobs, which is incredibly sad considering how much time of our lives we spend at work. Life’s too short to waste doing something you don’t enjoy and there will be something out there you’ll love so much it won’t feel like work, so don’t settle till you’ve found it.

The greatest prison people live in, is the fear of what other people think. And the moment we start caring about what the others think of us, is the moment we stop being ourselves. We can never control the filters that others choose to look at us. There are innumerable dreams that are made to commit suicide only because of this fear. You know what, caring about others is useless. Most people don’t even know what they think of themselves. And for the handful of ‘judgmental’ people, we should feel sorry, for they have a boring life. Instead of being fearful, be jealous of them for they have all the time in the world to worry about things that are none of their business.

Winston Churchill has very rightly said, “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” And why not! Even the most successful people in the world got rejected from jobs and failed at some of their endeavours. Success doesn’t come overnight. You can still achieve great things despite failing, as long as you stay enthusiastic and don’t let yourself be knocked down.

To sum it up – Always, always, always- listen to your heart because even though it is on the left, it is always right. None of us is going to live forever. So whatever time you have, get out there, get your hands dirty, do what your heart says, do what you love or don’t do it at all. You only live once, make sure it’s worth it!

Three habits to give up for a simpler life.

0

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
                                                                                                                                   -Confucius

There are some habits that knowingly or unknowingly make our lives complicated. So here I list them all for you to check them out of your lives.

It is one of those habits that ruins all other things for us. Overthinking leads to analysis paralysis and we get scared before even starting a task. Outcome : no outcome at all or procrastination.

  1. Set short deadlines for yourself. I have found that learning to set short deadlines is really helpful for this, although it take a bit to practice. Take a window of 30 seconds. Should i go to the gym? Rule out a yes or a no in 30 seconds only. This helps!
  2. Know when to stop. If you can’t think through it right now. Stop. Think about it later. Grab some food or get some sleep.
  3. Stop making your schedule complicated. It’s very easy to get stuck in the same old rut at work or in school. To spend your hours there like you usually do and like most of the other people do too. Instead of simplifying it we tend to complicate our lives thinking it might simplify it.
  4. Do what would truly matter in the long run. Ask yourself: what is the most important thing I can do today? Ask yourself: is this thing going to matter to me after 5 weeks from now or 5 years from now? If not. Drop it!
  5. Start with one task. Instead of cluttering too many tasks, take it easy. Start with one small task and take it slow.
  6. Stop complicating your relationships. Our loved ones are always compromising for us. They give us their all without asking for anything in return. Respect this.
  7. Don’t try to assume things. If there is a communication gap, talk it out. Stop assuming things. Stop being a mind-reader. Just go, ask and sort it out.
  8. Control your drama. Control your work and stress and don’t drag your personal relations into it. Keep your personal and professional life separate.

These habits definitely, unconsciously are taking a toll on us gradually. It’s high time that we act. So take a moment, think and work it out. Goodluck!

Stress-free ways to get work done daily

0

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
                                                                                                                                                   – Aristotle

We all wonder, how can you get that work done in a way that is less stressful, less energy consuming and simply a bit smarter? So, today I’m sharing some smart ways to simplify and relaxify your daily work.

  1. Don’t multitask.

The more the number of tasks, the greater the stress. Do just one job at a time and you’ll do a better job compared to if you multi-task things. Conversely, if you are stressed and confused, remind yourself yourself to limit the number of ongoing tasks to one and you will see how the stress level goes down.

  1. Keep your workspace de-cluttered.

It keep the thinking clear and the focus straight. Do not, i repeat, DO NOT keep anything which is not of use on your desk while working. It is only an attention-robber.

Eliminate unnecessary tasks from your schedule. Tasks that take up your time, but would do you no harm if you rule them out of your schedule. For eg- checking mail three times a day. You can do good by checking mails twice a day and that third time is just because you have been doing it since long. Eliminate it.

  1. Work and breaks go hand-in-hand.

Work for a fixed duration and then take rest for a fixed time. Regular breaks keep motivation and productivity going. Set timer for 30 minutes or so. During this time, only focus on the one task at hand. It would become easier to do so because you know that you only have to do it for this limited time period. When the timer rings, leave your work for 5-15 minutes. During this time, focus only on resting. Have a snack, take a nap or do whatever relaxes you.

  1. Don’t be upset when things don’t go as planned.

Rather learn from this experience so that this situation could be avoided in the future. It’s a better use of your time than spending it on regretting a past that you cannot change anyway.

  1. Keep emails and online activities for the end of the day.

Unless very important, refrain from checking emails or social networking apps till the end of the day. This is so because it can add a lot of stress and suck away your limited energy and attention early in the day. Use the fresh energy in other important tasks.

  1. Re-focus yourself, everyday.

Ask yourself questions every day that help you to find your focus. If you like, write these questions down on a note and put that note where you cannot avoid seeing it during your day. It’s so easy to get off track during a day, re-focussing is important.

  1. Focus on the process and not on the result.

Focus on what you actually can do, on what action you can take to move forward. Focus on the how-to’s and not on the what-if’s. what-if’s generate fear and hold us back whereas how-to’s generate creativity and empowers us to find ways to get our work done.

These effortless tips help you lead a stress-free life and ensure that great focus in the moment. Try these and you won’t regret.

Time management

0

We all are aware of the importance of efficient time management. However, in this blog I’m not going to list down the consequences of a bad time management. Take this like a revelation for all those Procrastinators out there.

Imagine you have a bank account that gets a deposit of $86,000 each morning. How wonderful! Isn’t it? But there is no carry over allowed from one day to another. You are not allowed to keep cash balances and every night the unused money gets cancelled out automatically. And the cycle repeats every day.

What would you do? Simple! You would withdraw every single penny each day. That is so obvious, right? To your surprise, we all have such a bank account. It’s name is TIME. Each morning, we are credited with 86,400 seconds. Every night all the seconds that we failed to use wisely get lost. No balance is carried over from day to day. No overdraft is allowed so we cannot borrow against ourselves or use more than what we have.

Each day, the account starts afresh.  If you fail to use the day’s deposits, it’s your loss and you can’t appeal to get it back. There is never any borrowing time. You can’t take a loan out on your time or against someone else’s. The time you have is the time you have and that is that.

Time management is completely up to us, just like it’s the case with money. We decide how we want to spend it and nobody else.

As they say, “Lost wealth can be regained by hard work. Lost knowledge may be regained by dedicated study. But lost time is lost forever.”

Time management is actually an oxymoron. Time is beyond our control and management. The clock keeps ticking regardless of how we manage our lives. Priority management is the answer to maximizing the time we have. Prioritize your tasks well. You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage to pleasantly, smilingly, unapologetically say ‘NO’  to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger ‘YES’ burning inside. The enemy of the ‘BEST’ is usually the ‘GOOD’.

So, prioritize the ‘BEST over the ‘GOOD’. Don’t just spend time, USE it! Time is the scarcest resource. Unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed. Keep these things in mind whenever you feel like procrastinating. Time flies to never return again.

Spend it wisely!

What to do when you feel de-motivated

0

“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
                                                                                                                                                                           -Zig Ziglar

Some days you wake up all motivated and driven. While on other days, it is difficult to even move out of the bad. All the motivation seems to have flown away. So, here I’m with my 3 favourite tips to find that lost motivation again.

  1. Sit down in a quiet place with minimal disturbance and close your eyes. Visualize yourself and your loved ones. Ask yourself:
  • How will my life be like after 5 years if I continue this way?
  • How negatively will this life pattern affect me and my loved ones?

Try to visualize it vividly. Try to figure out the nuances and consequences  of such a life where you are working purposelessly and without any motivation.

Now, visualize the opposite. Visualize the positive side of it. Ask yourself:

  • How will my life look after 5 years if I change it for good?
  • How positively will this change affect me and my loved ones?

This way, you will clearly see what you want/don’t want from your life. It will also give you your personal reasons to work for that life. It will motivate you to introduce a change in your life, for your own good. You be driven from inside.

Write down the reasons, DOs and DONTs after this recharge session on a sheet of paper and stick it on your work station. See it often and get reminded of it all. Quick dose of motivation! Isn’t it?

  1. Draw motivation from people around you.

Tap into the motivational energy and perspectives of other people. Talk to the people around you about their dreams and what makes them feel motivated to achieve that. Get to know their strategies and their perspectives on motivation.

Not just the people around you, but anyone who has a motivational story. Use the internet, audio books, books, blogs, interviews of the famous people. People who already have achieved their dreams. Get to know what worked for them and try it for yourself. However, some things don’t work for everyone, so, go ahead design a fresh strategy for yourself. Apply all the permutation and combination of strategies and make them work for you. Have motivation tailor-made for you by your own self!

  1. Just get started.

Sometime, getting started is the only mountain that you have to conquer and once you are in momentum it isn’t any difficult for you. So, start with a small task. Any small task that would keep you going. Promise to do this task for only 5 minutes with full focus, shutting all the distractions. After 5 minutes, if the momentum doesn’t get developed- stop doing it altogether. However, chances are that the 5 minute would be enough to get you engrossed in the task so much so that you would want to continue it even after the time gets over. Do this 5 minute test. If it works for you, well and good. If it doesn’t work for you, try again later- after all it is only a matter of 5 minutes. The idea is to get you going.

Nobody feels motivated every single day and that is OK. You can try these tips for youself and soon the motivation will start to catch up with you.
