Each one of us has a set of beliefs that have been conditioned into our mind since our childhood. Some were taught to us by our parents, our teachers and some were learned by us through observation. But little do we realise, that some of our beliefs are actually holding us back. There is a short story that depicts this beautifully. Read on to find out.
There was a man who was passing by the elephants. He suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg – no chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and not attempted to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life, hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before? We couldn’t do so many things when we were kids. But holding onto the fact that the same things cannot be accomplished by us even now, would be a huge mistake. We are all capable of doing whatever we want. The only thing holding us back is – OUR OWN SELF.
Let today be the day, you give up who you have been for who you can become. Let go of all the negative beliefs, emotions, things and people which are holding you back in life.
“Don’t let the leash of a limiting belief hold you back from getting what you want in life.” Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind, be led by the dreams in your heart.
The sky is not the limit, your belief system is! The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it. Our beliefs have the power to lead our life into either of the two directions – life affirming or life denying.
So, are your beliefs holding you back? Let them go. Realise your true beliefs, eliminate the ones holding you back. Hold onto the life affirming ones and work on them. Don’t let something worthless ruin what is worthwhile.
Make smart choices. The beliefs you are emotionally attached to, might be stopping you from achieving what you are truly worth. Control your emotions, don’t let your emotions control your life.
Always remember, what is holding you back? It is always a thought that something is holding you back!
